Our Team

Andrew Faulkner, Principal

Andrew is the creative guru at afstudio (although without the ponytail). He's a veteran of demanding design & production environments, and as senior designer for Macworld Magazine he gained his reputation for always displaying grace under pressure. Following his creative passions, Andrew launched afstudio in 1993, and has built a solid reputation for making complicated projects look easy. Print publication clients include Sunset Magazine, Addison Wesley, and Chronicle Books. New media clients include Adobe, Peachpit Press, Oracle, and Paypal.com.

In his spare time, Andrew is a talented illustrator and his work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The LA Times, and The Washington Post. Andrew earned his BA in Fine Arts from Trinity College and has received his share of awards from industry groups including the American Design Awards, Western Publication Association, and Magazine Design and Production Competition.

Elaine Gruenke, Senior Designer

Elaine gave up a thriving design business to join the afstudio design team. Her business partner, Sammy, agreed to the decision in exchange for more lettuce (he's a rabbit.)

Elaine has a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University and has completed fine arts coursework at Rhode Island School of Design. Her education combined with her extensive experience as a freelance designer makes her the ultimate multi-tasker. She can prepare design presentations and manage several projects - all while juggling machetes with one hand and text messaging with the other.

Joy Ohler, Designer

Joy holds a degree from the The Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Well, she doesn't actually hold it because she's a multi-tasking acrobat leaping between web and interactive to print and packaging projects. Joy, originally from the Philippines, came to this country over 10 years ago with rich life experience, including a stint as a Platoon Leader in her Citizen's Army Training days (which comes in hand when it comes to project management!). Joy's love of typography, photography and good food, is only equaled by her love of music which she shares with her husband, "Zero to Couch" drummer Nick Ohler.

Joy is currently working on here Masters of Graphic Design from The Academy of Art (in her free time).

Megan Lee, Designer

Megan Lee, a San Francisco native, is a graduate of California College of the Arts and relies on her dog Otis for art direction ideas. In fact, the studio has converted it's standard for measure from picas to paw-prints. Megan is as well versed designing for the printed page as she is exploring pixel frontiers of the web. In her free time she enjoys mud-wrestling, stock-trading and has a thriving earring business @ lovelylittlebird.com.

“We've worked with afstudio on several projects, and each time, Andrew's deft, elegant approach has given us a winning design solution.”
